Grace Wales Bonner won the coveted LVMH 2016 prize , selected from among eight finalists by a jury of some of fashion’s most illustrious names including Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci and Nicolas Ghesquière.
Wales Bonner mixes African and European influences, embellishments of crystals with shells and embroideries to create an elegant hybrid style.
The London-based designer, a 2014 graduate of Central Saint Martins, was born to an English mother and a Jamaican father and says she “nurtures the two sides of her identity.” In November, Wales Bonner was awarded the British Fashion Award for Best Emerging Designer. The Special Jury Prize went to 19-year old Toronto-based designer Vejas Kraszewski, the youngest designer to ever be nominated for the prize.
